everything is SO much more complex than it seems. something as basic as a road encapsulates tens of thousands of years of research and requires the work of experts in hundreds of different fields that you haven’t even heard of - and that goes for every single thing around you

Even the MEMORIES took effort. Your mom and dad put effort to make your holidays and birthday feel special none of that was guaranteed. My childhood was very much curated by the adults around me that chose to put their best foot forward to make my experience great

My dad cared for over 3 acres of lawn, shrubbery, and plantings until he was 87. Now 3 of his children are struggling to keep up with what looked effortless for him. I never knew! It was always beautiful! 🥹

this is why socialism is so enticing to the youth. it takes a lot to change one's lifestyle, much easier to stick with what "works" for them than what's going on around them

It hit me like a truck when you brought up health too because I was watching this while doing my new foot maintenance routine. The older you get the more projects get added to your plate just to maintain what once seemed inherent to your own existince

The idea of humans collectively fighting entropy was a huge hit to the psyche, but the idea that most people do statistically insignificant or even detrimental amounts of work to maintain and improve systems in the US is even crazier. Think of what we could achieve if half our society was also doing work that made things rather than paper pushing and marketing

And then people will actually say things like "Why should I have to work just to live?". Because existence is work.

I also did not fully grasp this until I became a homeowner. The house and land are constantly trying to turn into ruin and wilderness.
