@theblackgrassagronomist: Yield losses, and grain contaminated with mycotoxins - which risk rejection by millers. Fusarium ear blight. Risks: Rotations which include maize. Crops established via min till particularly direct drilling where previous crop residues lie on the surface (if you open leftover maize stalks they’ll sometimes by pink inside with fusarium fungus) No seed treatment. Fusarium fungi populations can build up early in the season from infected grain used for drilling. Variety. Different varieties have different resistances- ranging from 5 to 7 out of 9. Rainfall. The big one! If there’s rain at flowering there’s a risk of grain infection. The amount of innoculum dictated by the above factors. If rain is forecast a fungicide at early flowering helps protect the grain sites. Fungicide options ranging from tebuconazole to Miravis. The crop in this video was high risk - solitaire wheat (low resistance) established via min till after maize, located in Cornwall, UK. It didn’t receive a T3 fungicide. It’s for feeding their own cattle, so they were happy to take the risk and tbf the yield penalty from the number of blind sites is small in this case. #agriculture #farming #farminglife #agronomy #wheat

Hi, exactly. But wheat was also sown in a sugar beet field—heavily contaminated with mycotoxins and without the use of direct-seeding methods. If it rains at an unfavorable time and an unsuitable variety is used, this can also pose a high risk.
