The best thing I learned is to just take a needle tool , turn it sideways and use it to scrape the crack closed !! The dried clay goes into the crack and the metal burnishes the crack closed. Such a lifesaver and works for me everytime

paper clay helps. it's a mix of bone dry clay, vinegar and shredded toilet paper. vinegar is a temporary deflocculant and the shredded toilet paper helps to add some strength. the clay has to be bone dry because you don't want any water content

the problem might be that the rest of the body is too dry compared to the cracked area, if you haven't tried yet maybe wrap it with wet paper towels to let the overall piece rehydrate somewhat before trying to repair the cracks. I use a mixed slip with vinegar and a little bit of water and really focus on compressing the clay and slip together in the cracked area and then wrapping it well to let the moisture level even out between the repaired area and the rest of piece. I hope this is helpful!

I agree with the suggestions that hydration is important. I avoid cracks by taking a damp tea towel and draping it over any projects that might warp or crack like handles or plates. Drying too fast isn’t the problem, drying unevenly is the cause of cracks and since switching to the damp tea towel method, I haven’t had to fix any cracks. I still use plastic for anything that won’t crack so it will dry slower and I can still trim later.

Do not add new wet clay. Any water will only make it worse. Is that rice wine vinegar? It needs to be white vinegar. You can also mix some bone dry clay with vinegar to make slip to cover it.

I just compress the clay by using a fine tipped tool and smoothing the crack out. It works well for me. I always run into problems if I wet the area

You need to soften with vinegar, score the cracks and filled with the clay you scrape off during the scoring process. Smooth and watch them. You might need to repeat a couple of times

Vinegar and scrape some of the clay that gets wet into it. You should never add a clay that is a different wetness, that creates cracks! Also cover the part you saved with plastic film and then put it closed under a plastic bag! You want everything to get the same humidity!

Vinegar, use a needle tool to score across the crack until it makes some slurry/crumblies, smush wet clay into the crack (gently) on all sides.

Cut up super tiny bits of newspaper and mix it with slip and vinegar. Make it a paste and slather it on… I let it dry enough and then clean it up as much as possible with a damp-ish sponge.

I just use vinegar without adding more clay, and that always works

Sometimes it helps to rescore the area, use vinegar or magic water and a little extra clay and get it smoothed out. Then get it back in a damp box if you have one to get damp again and then dry more slowly

I’ve never tried in delicate/sculpted pieces like the one you made, but u can try by rehydrating the area by place a wet cotton/cloth on the area overnight so it can soften up a bit, then u can score it to open it up a bit more (I know this sounds scary but this is necessary because then the slip can fully fill up all the air/empty space) and then fill the crack with slip, let it dry and polish✨

For the smaller crackers I also use a wooden tool and just compress compresss compress. It worked wonders on some casserole handles.

These are the kind I use. Lightweight 100% cotton is key. You don’t want the thick kitchen towels that are fluffy - they are heavy when wet and could distort your project.

We need to make a slip. Add dry clay crumbs to the vinegar, make a slip and cover it with it. The vinegar will quickly evaporate and the crack will be sealed. It would be even better if you immediately polish this place with a heavy tool from above. Then the surface tension of the crust will be created and it will be even stronger. Good luck

structural cracks like that are really hard to chase, ive seen all sort of wild things done, from paper clay, to mictures made sith sodium silicate and calcined clay powder, and even refractary mortar.... but at the end of the day, cracks like that are very likely to open back up in the kiln. sometimes its just best to take the lesson and understand why they formed in the first place. they are really cool pieces

crushed bone dry clay + vinegar + shredded toilet paper. mix into a spackle consistency. (depending on the type of crack) dig out the crack. fill gap with mixture. compress and slow dry. don't use water or fresh clay to fix a crack usually just makes it worse and creates uneven moisture in the piece. bisque fix and Egyptian paste are other options as well.

The parts off the bowl are drying too fast. Wrap the parts off the edge more

I use slip and vinegar, then put in a wet box for a few weeks…that was all the clay will be at the same dryness, then dry SUPER slowly. U can also try painting a light layer of wax resist on the join which will help the join dry slower (don’t worry it burns off in bisque)
