@lowpolyshorts: A 47-year-old woman in Detroit suffered from severe bone pain and tooth loss for years before doctors discovered she had skeletal fluorosis caused by her daily habit of consuming a pitcher of tea made with over 100 tea bags. Although medical staff initially suspected cancer due to dense bone patterns visible on her X-rays, specialists recognized the rare condition from international cases involving excessive fluoride intake. While fluoride is often added to drinking water to prevent cavities, the extreme volume of tea consumed by the patient led to fluoride levels in her blood more than four times higher than the healthy range, causing her ligaments to calcify and her bones to become abnormally dense. After she stopped her heavy tea consumption, her symptoms began to improve.
