if you study this way you end up singing as an actor acting as a singer.... a perfect simulation .... but still a simulation.... real singing is when your soul sings in the unique way you feel and you dont sound as anybody from before

Performers should never imitate other people. Find your OWN voice and musicality. What did people do before recordings???

This issue is that I can mimic many artists when I’m actively listening to a song, but when I try singing it a cappella it doesn’t sound very good

No notes on this video. Absolute perfection! Transcription like this is the most important skill to learn how to sing - it’s odd that many jazz instrumentalists seem to knows this more than singers (the good ones seem to definitely know this tho)

imitating envelope is the key for absorbing and coming up with your own style. its important to focus on the attack, decay, sustain, and release of every phrase.

Mimicking has always caught my interest because I love learning how my favorite singers sing, but I struggle with breath support and finding my voice back. I feel like I’m just copies of others and I don’t know what I sound like myself at this point

If you mimic singing runs, you will start doing it naturally because it’s muscle memory

imo voice coaches can help. but i agree (in addition to talent), you do really need to hear the differences in styles when you're trying to mimic an artist. you are very talented tho

as a voice teacher, I ask my students who their favorite singer is on the first lesson bc I get a feel who they’re going to sound like! and I love recommending them to different artists when they’re trying to get better at a concept!! our ears are our most useful tool 🎶

I learned this very early on as a kid. I used to sing along to a lot of Sinatra. He has a unique style. He's very much about TIMING and phrasing. After that it was easy to mimic other singers

Yes! Transcription is so important - it’s kinda like building a vocal vocabulary that eventually you end up pulling from your other references or it helps you build upon your own ideas 🤓

Also, vowels! The way you shaped your mouth for Frank (taller) vs Nat (wider) on the vowels makes a difference!

Excellent breakdown. As a sax player I always appreciated how Joni Mitchell phrases her voice like a horn player. Every instrument, voice is no exception, is as much a rhythmic ingredient as drums.

Wowwww! I never had a vocal coach growing up but I always always wanted to be a good singer. I practiced songs over and over until they were flawless and honestly the rest came with THEN finding my tone (my own voice). Maybe everyone’s doing it backwards.
