It’s not Coke Zero. It’s Coca Cola Zero. Completely different product from Coke. Diet Coke is based on the failed New Coke. It’s the only product to survive the New Coke recipe launch and it’s why it’s the only one named Coke and all the rest are labeled Coca Cola.

Diet Coke was never supposed to taste like Coke. It was the first diet drink and the idea that diet drinks should just be a sugar free version of the normal one was not a thing yet. So they aimed for the "New Coke" flavour that had tested well. But people wrongly think this taste difference is what aspertain tastes like. It's just a different drink.

No, the best diet soda ever is Zero Sugar Mountain Dew Baja Cabo Citrus. The length of its name is proportional to how delicious it is 😂

I love Diets over Zeros. I like the aim of tasting like a different soda. The zero sugar versions are just the og flavors - very close. And that’s cool, but I’ll just have a coke or Pepsi if I wanted them. If they had beet sugar like throwback or real sugar, I’d have them.

Diet coke came out waaay back in the before days, which is why it tastes like that (few low-cal sweetener options, hence the aspartame aftertaste). They keep making it because some people prefer it, possibly due to familiarity.

If Diet Coke is fresh out of the fridge/machine cold its fine. But as soon as it gets just a few degrees warmer its gross. Coke Zero is good all the time.

fun fact: peoples taste of artificial sweeteners (aka diet soda here) is similar to the cilantro debate - it is a genetic thing with your taste reception to the artificial sweetener and it is repulsive to some people and good to others

They very specifically did not make Diet Coke taste like Coke, my man. That was an intentional part of the creation and advertising. It is not meant to be a facsimile, it’s meant to be its own thing. I hate it, as a result, but it is intentional.
