On one side, people sit in the dark theater, watching the screen. They came here to leave their own thoughts behind and disappear into someone else’s story. The theater looks beautiful. Red seats. Soft lights. Heavy curtains. Everything is made for escape. But Hopper does not let us stay there. He pulls our attention to the usherette standing alone at the side. She is close to the movie, but she is not inside it. Her body is still. Her head is lowered. One hand rests near her face. She looks lost in thought, like someone carrying something private and heavy. That is where the painting becomes more than a movie theater. On the left, people look outward, toward the screen. On the right, one woman turns inward, toward her own thoughts. The theater is made for distraction. But she cannot be distracted. Hopper did not paint the movie people came to watch.
