Right. Sudoku is about critical thinking and pattern recognition rather than maths skills. I'm reasonably good at maths and terrible at Sudoku.

Because it’s a portion of math that most places don’t outright teach. Basic combinatorics is taught as just pattern recognition, but it gets very deep.
