Previous caretakers reported that he barks, lunges, and reacts strongly to strangers, but also noted that he is capable of forming relationships with people once given time to build trust. They reported that he successfully lived with another large dog following a slow introduction. In the shelter, Spider presents very differently in and out of his kennel. He often hard barks, charges kennel doors, and displays high levels of arousal while confined. He has repeatedly jumped into kennel walls and ceilings hard enough to cause abrasions to his nose and raise concerns about injury. Staff have also observed him attempting to force limbs through kennel bars while distressed. Once removed from the kennel, Spider has consistently been easy to handle. Multiple staff members report that he leashes easily, walks without issue, allows full-body handling, accepts treats gently, and remains neutral around people in the environment. During enrichment sessions he has shown a playful side, enjoying tennis balls, puzzle toys, training exercises, and affection. He knows several cues, including sit, shake, and down, and has shown interest in learning additional commands.
