Thank you for this, it’s a DAILY struggle, I’m working on this daily. I set a timer when I clean to prove it won’t take hours, to prove I actually have time to take on tasks. It’s helping. Your advice is so helpful!!

I’ve been glued to my recliner for 2 hours with task paralysis. Laundry, meal prep, dishes, and cleaning await me. 🙄

what are some good examples for rewards that don’t necessarily require buying anything or using food as the reward? 😅

I've realized that sensory issues are a big reason why I avoid certain tasks. Doing the dishes/taking out the garbage both have disgusting smells as well as tactile and visual grossness. And they are the tasks I hate THE MOST. I'll do laundry, wipe down surfaces, vacuum, tidy up all day while leaving dirty dishes in the sink and avoiding taking out the nasty garbage. It makes me literally gag every time! I don't even mind cleaning the toilet because the grossness is on the other side of a brush. I try to pair the nasty tasks with fun podcasts or music, but I can't quite get over this.

Trauma-informed therapist with ADHD here: YES! It's important to understand that our brains are hardwired for survival, sometimes in direct disservice of thriving. These processes are subconscious. We can have gratitude for our brains and provide ourselves with more grace by remembering this! EMDR and somatic experiencing are excellent ways to target the amygdala and autonomic nervous system!

“Do this one big step.” “Nooo. I can’t.😩” “Ok, we’ll do the big step of breaking this one big step into smaller steps😈” 😩😩😩

Alain | ADHD Burnout Coach :
Task initiation is such an overlooked part of ADHD. Knowing the steps does not automatically make the starting point accessible, especially when the task feels unclear, overwhelming or requires several decisions before you even begin.

This explains why I have so much resistance to getting ready, because so often after I’m ready I just still feel like crap about myself or it’s just a frustrating process

I always just say "ok let's just do this one little part and that's it" and when I break it down I usually end up doing more. I think I have avoidance against my own self 🤣
