i get so annoyed at videos with subtitles censoring the subs like... sometimes they rly make it harder to understand. i want the full context. at least make it a recognizable censor but youtube esp they just redact it sometimes entirely

Yeah? That’s an FCC requirement. If you are in the US and see broadcast media with a discrepancy between audio and captions, you can report it.

songs as well! if you can hear the lyrics to the song, they should be captioned! so many song lyrics are thematically important to stories and how you understand them, and the lyrics not being captioned actively takes away from getting the whole story!!

the swearing thing is annoying but I find simplifying to wording to be worse. if youre going to simplify the wording label the subtitles as being simplified dont just do it.

and that teachers if they want to show a class a education video needs to make sure theres subtitles atleast, so many times ive had teacher choose videos and movies without subtitles and i have to struggle through it

i hate that youtube automatically censors the subtitles, i try to rewrite my subtitles or just put my own in while editing but sometimes it's hard for me to hear what's goin on 😭🙏

I don’t remember if this actually happened or if it was just a fever dream but I swear I remember when I was younger that I was watching a live broadcast of something and the Stenographer clearly had reached their limits because at one point the subtitles said “I genuinely cannot understand what’s being said, I’m trying my best.” Before going back to recording the subtitles like usual.

according to the FCC the subtitles have to match the dialog that isn't being said. you can actually report accessibility issues to them. I know it is for TV but I think it applies to streaming services too
