I mean yeah, anyone can follow a recipe, but that doesn’t mean they can look at a bunch of ingredients and think “Oh, I could make something really tasty with these!” My dad, for example, is always making new kinds of dishes for us to try. And he can do it because he knows how cooking works without even looking at a recipe. When he DOES follow a recipe, he uses all his own methods for it and sometimes even uses a different ingredient because he knows it’ll taste better or because of a dietary restriction, but he knows what to substitute it WITH. He’s made his own recipe books he uses regularly. I can’t do any of that. Even following a recipe requires you to have basic cooking knowledge, like recognizing how long it’ll take for a steak to get to rare, medium, or well-done. A lot of recipes say things like “cook until done” but don’t give a time, and someone with no cooking knowledge could burn or undercook it. So yeah, when I ask someone “Can you cook?” I’m asking if they can COOK, not follow a recipe, because there IS a difference

Being able to follow and execute directions in a recipe is a skill that unfortunately not everyone has

Idk whenever I tell people I can bake they’re like “omg I can’t it’s so hard” and I’m like you literally just follow a recipe… but people insist they always mess up recipes. So I think even if you can follow a recipe you’re doing better than some people 😂

It means recognizing when to adjust the temperature, or time, what spices to add to balance or enhance flavors, how to thicken a sauce, etc. Following a recipe is one thing, but knowing the fundamentals is how I take it.

I think being able to make tasty, basic food without a recipe is the true meaning of can you cook. I don't need a recipe for everything.

ppl will say "omg I can't cook" and then you watch them try to follow a recipe and realize they're right bc wdym you don't know what it means to saute or simmer or reduce

I’ve always immediately assumed “can you cook?” was actually them asking “do you enjoy cooking?” Cause i believe

I look at food and decide I can make it without reading the recipe. Even when I look at some recipes I always end up adding something different because I know it will taste good. I can't bake though.

I take it to mean like knowing what goes well together and being able to create something that's good. Even if it's taking a recipe and going this needs tweaks and then adjusting and it comes out better. Because sometimes recipes are just good bases, but they definitely need a bit more. Knowing what that "more" is.

When people ask if you can cook it usually just means “can you utilize knives, ovens, stove tops, etc to complete a recipe without contaminating all the food or injuring yourself or causing a fire?”

i think if you check what ingredients you have in your house and make something with it then you know how to cook, doesn’t matter if you watch a vid to help yourself

Following a recipe doesn’t necessarily equate to good cooking though. Can you follow a recipe and recognize it needs more or less of something than the recipe states, cook it longer or shorter depending on your stove, do you know how to dice an onion, not just randomly cut it up etc

Sometimes I use recipes but usually I decide what I want to cook, look up similar recipes to see how other people do it, and then decide how much of that I want to follow.
