@samuelszuchan: Korean plastic surgery clinics pre-print official certificates because their patients routinely can't board flights home. In October 2017, three Chinese women sat in a Korean airport during Golden Week, faces wrapped in compression bandages, eyes swollen shut. They couldn't board. They no longer looked like their passport photos. Each carried a plastic surgery certificate from her clinic in Seoul: passport number, dates of stay, procedures performed, official hospital seal. The clinics had started pre-printing these because the transformations were so routine and so total that patients needed an affidavit to re-enter their own countries. Seoul has 561 7-Eleven locations. It has roughly 631 plastic surgery clinics. The single neighborhood of Gangnam holds around 500 of them inside a square mile and a half, layered up the sides of office towers, signage stacked floor by floor. One in five South Korean women has had a procedure. Among women aged 19 to 29 in Seoul, the rate is closer to one in two. In 2024, South Korea drew 1.17 million foreign medical patients, and plastic surgery and dermatology accounted for about 77% of the growth in foreign medical spending. This isn't a beauty trend. It's a vertically integrated industrial sector whose product happens to be human faces.
