The call was correct. I hate it for Iran, but the call was perfect. The goalkeeper wasn’t the last defender after he came off his line. Pretty amazing awareness by the Egyptian manager.

According to FIFA’s Law 11, a player is only offside if they are closer to the goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent. In this play, look at the defender at the very top with their hands up; they are the deepest player on the field, which makes them the "second-last opponent". Because that defender is standing deeper than the attacker, the attacker is legally onside, meaning it is physically impossible for them to be offside. When the referee or VAR ignores that deep player and draws a line somewhere else, they are essentially ignoring the actual rule of the game—by the book, this is a goal.
