Who’s demanding the AI though? Us consumers don’t want it. Everyday gadgets are beyond good enough for us regular people to use. The AI niche is such a small percentage. So who is this really for?

Sorry. I’m a 30-year full stack dev, and I’m not excited about this future. They’re not building this infrastructure for MY benefit.

Meanwhile Apple made $120BILLION in profits last year alone and Tim Cook says that price increases are unavoidable. The greed is just infuriating!

They are insisting that AI is the product to solve a problem that doesn’t actually exist. The power grid cannot support data centers. Eventually local run AI will be the thing and data centers will be useless.

One note - your comment that the cost of establishing infrastructure is high, but the benefits are long term is true with public infrastructure. Not so much with privately owned, for profit infrastructure. The benefits are long term, but not for the people who are struggling as a consequence of this infrastructure development. The benefits will primarily (if not exclusively) be felt by the owners of the infrastructure.

People need to learn to vote with their wallets. Stop using a couple of services, you can live without it but they can't. That's how we get change.

The data centers can stay, but all the hardware inside is gonna have to get replenished and refreshed every five years and that’s gonna be a pretty high cost as it is. I don’t see how any of this is sustainable at this point.

Data centers need to pay for 100% of the costs of their electricity buildout, and they need to pay higher rates than other ratepayers. The unit cost of electricity should go up the more you consume.
