about the whole thing that servers do get a base wage: it is true. if they don't earn enough in tips, legally the restaurant is obligated to cover the difference to ensure that the server makes at least minimum wage. BUT the catch is that servers that have that happen to a lot tend to get fired, because the restaurant is assuming they aren't going to have to do that and that the waitress should be able to earn enough in tips to cover the difference between the tipped wage and minimum wage. it's a sucky system but not tipping isn't going to change that.

tipping is not gift giving. it started as a way for employers to pay black employees less

tipping isn't going away in America even if server wages went away. The west coast has proven that. The base wage here is $14-21.30 an hour, but we still tip. Tips are an appreciation thing. It's a cultural norm that a lot of us actually enjoy

The biggest issue with the tipping system is the guilt to tip more and more

Could be a point. But what doesn't sit in my mind is this:
My friend takes a plate of 100 dollars
I take a plate of 10 dollars.
The waiters brings them at the same time with the same effort, why my friend has to pay 25 dollars more and me only 2.5 dollars more for exactly the same service from the waiters?

Two things, 1:notice how he doesn’t say “I love the American tipping culture and it is a good thing” but rather just points out that showing up to a restaurant and not tipping only hurts the workers and not anyone else. 2:noticing how NO ONE in this comment section is going to restaurants letting the staff know ahead of time that they aren’t going to tip. Why? Because it’s not about what’s “right” it’s about cheating a system and not caring about who is impacted

Nobody is asking the restaurant to bring me free water and free bread. They choose to do that. I choose not to tip.

He never said that his solution was to not tip. He's just saying it can be seen as a moral issue, and not just a cultural inconvenience which was what the tiktok was about. I don't see him saying that it's right not to tip because of it. That's two different discussions. If I haven't missed another comment from him.

I would argue that the service in American restaurants/customer service in general isn't good, it's overwhelming. I literally just want someone to take my order, and then leave me alone. In the same way if I'm in a shop I don't want someone to come up to me, I'm an adult - if I want you, I will call you over

Where on earth did you get the idea that restaurants in Europe don't give you any food for free when you sit down? That's normal across Europe and many other countries.

The issue with even telling server beforehand is that the server makes money from having tables and they only have 3-6 tables so if you’re sitting in one, the server is losing money from your occupation of their table

This is incorrect. We get free stuff with our orders too. they give you more in the USA, but considering that it costs twice/thrice as much without including tax/tip no one thinks you'll have to add even more money on top. They seem to operate on absurd profit margins, so it's restaurants fault.

this whole system just sounds like I'm being guilt tripped into paying more, that doesn't sound like gift giving.

my first time in the US last summer, 8 times out of 10, service was horrible or no better then Europe. In Japan, service is exceptional and it's frowned upon to tip. explain that.

I think most servers would need to be paid $30-40/hr to make up the tips they make on an average 4hr shift over the busy time.

in Florida according to what I read if a server's tips don't get them to $7.25 average per hour they worked by the end of the pay period the restaurant is supposed to make up the difference.

bro just assumes things. Where do you get the idea that there is no free bread in germany or europe? or that europeans would take advantage of it? The difference is that a tip should be a form of gratitude or something you want to gift someone. Not a requirement for employees to have a normal wage

its a strawman argument. the employees contract is with the employer, not the Customer, yet somehow the USA has convinced the employee its the responsibility its the responsibility of the Customer to pay them.
quiet night? the employer still gets their time, but in your system doesnt pay them for it.

While I think I get the general context of the American service industry, saying that service is poor in countries where tips aren’t expected or seen as almost mandatory is inaccurate and you’re also doing the American thing where you talk about Europe as if it’s a single country. What you end up doing by defending the American hospitality industry and attributing its “high quality” of service to tipping culture, is indirectly saying that if other places took on the same system, then you’d get better service. And while it isn’t in Europe, Japan famously has very high quality of customer service in the restaurant industry, and tipping isn’t even accepted most places, while wages aren’t all that high to begin with. What I’m trying to say is that the standard quality of service is something largely cultural. Poor service is poor service.

I do think there is some overreach with tipping by companies. Like I went to a burger place, not a fast foot place but also not a full restaurant, and I never interacted with the staff. I walked in, placed my order on a touch kiosk, paid up front then got my own drink and sat down. Someone did bring me my food but didn’t say a word. Just put on the table and left. And they had the audacity when I was checking out before the food to ask for a tip. Like I didn’t get any service or hospitality, why would I tip? And I know for a fact that burger chain is using tips as an excuse to pay their servers less than they would have to if they just paid an hourly wage. And multiple places are doing this now and it needs to stop.
