This building was once described as “the greatest addition to Toronto’s Manhattan-like skyline.” It opened in 1931 as the headquarters of the Canadian Bank of Commerce and at 34 storeys, it instantly became the tallest building in the entire British Empire. And what makes it even more remarkable is when it was built. Construction started just as the Great Depression hit. Banks were failing across North America, yet this project didn’t scale back. The bank insisted on using Canadian materials and labour, and completed it exactly as planned. And they didn’t build it modestly. Inside is one of the most impressive interiors in the country, a massive vaulted banking hall modelled directly after the Baths of Caracalla in ancient Rome, with a gold-coffered ceiling designed to project stability and power. At the top, there was even a public observation deck. For 25 cents, anyone could go up and look out over a city that was just beginning to grow. That deck is now closed. And near the roofline, there are massive carved stone faces—each one representing Courage, Observation, Foresight, and Enterprise, still looking out over a skyline that has completely outgrown it. Because by the 1960s, taller buildings took over. And in the 1970s, an even larger tower,Commerce Court West, was built right beside it. The original skyscraper didn’t change. It just stopped being the centre of attention. But for over 30 years, this wasn’t just another building. It was the tallest structure in an entire empire.
