He only wrote the first five books. The rest were found by accident, or occasionally discovered, by family members in the family attic. And this continued for decades. One expert explained it this way: when a publisher is short on cash, they "accidentally find" an unfinished or unsent book, which is actually written by another author who can empathize with the previous author. Many publishers do this, and families of the deceased agree. Tolkien, however, wrote only five books. These were the ones on the list from 1 to 5. Until his death, he was revising The Lord of the Rings. He worked on nothing else.
