there's a theory that explains why. basically family guy is what's happening in Peter's head. Meg was popular and when she was dui, her and Chris were involved in a fatal drunk driving accident. Meg died, and Chris survived but was left with severe brain damage from a lack of oxygen. Driven by grief, a pregnant Lois took her own life, killing herself and unborn Stewie. The entire plot of Family Guy is just Peter's subconscious mind coping with the trauma. He projects Meg as an outcast everyone hates because he secretly blames her for the accident. He envisions Stewie as a hyper-intelligent genius to represent the life and potential his unborn son never got to have.
