@global.intel.ltr: America’s European Destiny Episode 1. Why America is on a path to European-style taxes. #economy #taxes #nationaldebt #investing #macroeconomics
By America do you mean the continent (Alaska to Patagonia) or the US?

Small correction. There is no free healthcare in Europe. We pay taxes, and we get services for them.

There is not even that much difference in taxes

I would also say that there seems to be a gap in understanding that in Europe we’re happy to pay tax if it benefits the community which it often does

So you can choose: higher taxes and organized state functions or lower taxes and supposed "freedom" where if you get sick you have to declare bankruptcy 🤣

I grew up and worked in Texas. In 2021 I retired in Spain. Yes, income tax is higher here but you can’t look at that alone. I own a chalet north of Valencia. My property taxes are less than 10% of the property taxes on my former house back in Austin. When I shop for everything from food to a car the advertised price is what I pay. IVA sales tax is rolled into the price instead of something that will be tacked onto the price. Go to restaurant and no tip is expected, at least where I go. There are fancy upscale places were the service may merit a tip, but then nothing like the 20% to 25% that are expected in the US today. So, overall my out of pocket for taxes and tips is probably less than what paid out in the US but I get more. I get great public transportation (high speed trains, Metro lines, etc.), good free public healthcare (my emergency room visit was fast and efficient and no one asked me how I was going to pay), excellent roads and much lower crime rates.

There will still be a difference. EU has 40% taxes and free healthcare, school and so on (if we can defend from Billioners privatization push). US will pay 40% tax income to enrich Billioners and will not have services.

I don't think that he does know what he's talking about because most states in America when you factor in State tax, Federal tax have higher tax rates than the UK and then you have to pay a fortune for health insurance so even though you may earn more in America you have less money at the end of the day.

I live in Portugal, and I'm happy to pay my taxes because they help fund free healthcare, free education, free school books, free public transport, and many other benefits. To me, those services are well worth it because they improve everyone's quality of life

Americans do not distinguish between socialism and countries governed according to the Nordic model. There are no socialist countries in Europe. Companies are not owned by the state but are privately owned. There is no central economic planning. I would guess that the US states subsidise private companies to a much greater extent than is the case in Europe.

given all the excesses the US pay that are included in european tax contributions like universal healthcare or free public transit, or nationalised healthcare the US is paying as much if not more for the same benefits

Healthcare is multiple times more expensive in the US. Everyone there needs a car: both parents + every child 16+. And how much worth is 6 weeks vacation + unlimited sick leave? And how much worth is the safety of your children? Americans seem to have more money, but in reality they have less

I am a Brit and just returned from USA to UK to retire. Added up, my US income tax, SS and local taxes (Mass) where about equal to UK - but in UK healthcare is free. Also, in UK pension tax breaks are way better than in USA (401K). In UK you get full annual tax deductions up to $75K in pension contributions and at age >55 you can pull 25% of your pot tax free. Sales tax of 20% in UK is a bummer !
