@consulting.connoisseur: Most interns don’t lose their return offer because of one big mistake. They lose it through small signals that make managers think: “Great attitude… but not quite ready.” Here are five of the biggest ones. 1. They go quiet after getting work A manager assigns a task. Then… nothing. No progress update. No questions. No sign they’re moving. Silence creates uncertainty. Instead: Send a quick check-in after the first day. “Quick update - I’ve confirmed X, started Y, and I’m validating Z before moving forward.” It takes 30 seconds and shows you’re thinking proactively. 2. They confuse effort with impact Nobody gets promoted for working hard. They get rewarded for making the team’s job easier. Don’t say: “I spent all day on this deck.” Say: “I reorganised the deck so the recommendation is easier to follow in the steering committee.” Same work. Very different value. 3. They wait too long to ask for help There’s a big difference between asking early and asking late. Early: “I’ve tried A and B. I’m leaning towards A because ____. Does that sound right?” Late: “I’ve been stuck for four days.” Managers don’t expect you to know everything. They do expect you to know when to ask. 4. They sit through meetings instead of working the room You’re not there just to listen. You’re there to spot opportunities. Keep track of: * decisions * owners * deadlines * recurring themes * problems nobody seems to own That’s usually where you can add the most value. 5. They don’t make their impact visible By the end of your internship, your manager shouldn’t have to remember why you were good. Make it obvious. Keep a running list of: * projects you improved * measurable results * positive feedback * before-and-after examples * problems you solved The easier you make the decision, the more likely you’ll get the offer. You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to feel like a safe hire. Communicate early. Learn quickly. Make people’s lives easier. That’s what earns return offers. I’m Ahmed.
