@rachelreallyrecommends: Back in the ’90s, when I was doing makeup at Playboy, there was one lip look they absolutely loved. Full. Glossy. Shiny. Sexy. Every model wanted lips that looked bigger, softer and almost wet in photographs. And the technique was surprisingly simple. We’d start with a darker brown lip liner, add a very pale pink lipstick, then use a touch of white shimmer to catch the light on the cupid’s bow and just beneath the centre of the lower lip. That tiny bit of highlight created the illusion of fullness before anyone was talking about lip contouring. Then came the final touch… A blob of gloss right in the centre of the lips. Back then we didn’t have endless lip oils and plumping glosses. We used Vaseline for everything. Seriously, every makeup artist seemed to have a pot of it in their kit. Looking back, it’s such a classic Playboy look. Very different from today’s softer, more natural lip styles, but there’s something comforting about recreating it. It feels a bit like meeting an old friend again.
