Not too far from the truth, but you left out that Faber, Newman and most other members of the Oxford Movement ended up becoming Catholics. The song was written about the Catholic Martyrs who were killed by Henry VIII when he established the Church of England. However, most Methodist and Anglican hymnals have edited the hymn to eliminate traces of Catholic doctrine such as the stanza where he invokes Mary's intercession.
