Each element was supposed to be different though. The only reason Aang learnt waterbending so fast was because it was so similar to airbending. If Katara uses a style that is similar to earthbending, she wouldnt have been able to teach Aang well as being aggressive and standing his ground was extremely difficult for him.

she did this in the original adaptation. her water ending was more earthbending style. and I'm assuming ice would have been seen as too aggressive for the original show.
