I do that but then say how I moved on and use that for advice for the person I'm comforting. Like "Oh, my dog died!", "Oh, well my dog died a month ago, I just distracted myself by talking with my friends, if you wanna talk with me to distract yourself off of it then you can?" I've been doing that for like years and my friend says it actually helps usually 90% of the time, I didn't think it was bad😕

I usually say "Oh it's okay something similar happened to me" and then I usually vaguely explain what happened and give them advice on how to get through their issues. I find that a lot of people like having someone to relate to when they vent so..

i totally agree, but sometimes I think it's fine to share ur own experiences if u're doing it to show that u know how they feel/giving examples on how u got out of that situation

i have ADHD and my way of showing you that you can be comfortable with me the same way i'm comfortable with you is telling a similar story to show that they're not alone. I don't mean to be selfish, i'm showing them that they can talk to me because i can understand their pain and also show them that they can be comfortable with me.

I dont do that, i give them a situation similar to that, that i've experienced, and then ive told them how i coped, and then i give them more solutions and words of encouragement, and endearment.
