1. The reason 401k is higher is partly from inflation itself increasing overall amount 2. Retirement Funds are meant for “retirement”, hard to say wages are increasing comparatively to inflation and the rise in costs of everything 3. US consumer debt is still increasing while overall savings are decreasing 4. Of course the stock market is up, rich people want to keep their own money / shareholders happy so why not startup a bunch of investment propaganda before pulling out right before the crash

Yeah but soon enough my generation won’t even be able to retire and get social security, 401k’s after retirement have a lot of nuances as well, also pensions are nonexistent mostly even for the jobs that still have them.
