I have a really solid theory for the end of Deltarune (Chapters 5 to 7) that connects the lore and character biology.
First, the Weird Route in Chapter 5 skips Chapter 6 entirely. To me, it’s like a floppy disk or a cassette tape: it forces us directly onto "Side B" of Chapter 7, a darker, alternative version of Side A (the normal route).
At the end of Chapter 5's Weird Route, Noelle forces Kris to drown in the lake with her, but they actually survive. Because Kris’s body is heavily saturated with residual Determination (DT), their physical contact allows the soul's energy to act like a dual pacemaker. Noelle clings to Kris knowing that as long as they are touching, the soul's Determination will extend its protection to both of them, keeping them alive underwater because the Player cannot afford a Game Over.
However, this is only a temporary fix. We know that Kris’s body literally starts to decompose when they spend too much time without our soul, which explains their green skin when they return from their nightly escapades, their body running purely on the remaining DT that stained their flesh.
No matter which side you're on (Side A or B), A soul swap will finally occur in Chapter 7 to stabilise the thing a bit: the Player will take control of the vessel we created at the very beginning of the game, and Kris will reclaim their original soul, the blue soul of Integrity (which explains why their skin turns blue in the Dark World, reflecting their true identity). This will finally stabilize their body
