@the.guidebook: Steep loose downhills are most people’s least favorite part of a hike, but if you get lower, lean slightly forward, and bend your knees you will feel so much more stable. Since your weight is evenly distributed across your whole foot, you have a lot more traction too. Try this out on your next steep descent, it will make those downhills so much more enjoyable! ✅ Follow us @the.guidebook for the best hikes, campsites, and outdoor tips to fuel your next adventure! #HikingTips #DownhillHiking #HikingTechnique #TrailTips #HikingForBeginners

Wrong! I bend, tuck my head and roll like a human hamster ball until I reach the bottom of the hill.

I tend to turn my body/feet slightly sideways so that I’m no longer going down like I’m on a set of skis… more like I’m on a snowboard and can dig into the ground with the sides of my feet as I would on the snow with a board… 🤷🏻♀️

Using poles will get one more forward which gives better balance just like skiing.

loose terrain hiking poles are good if you have them but these are good tips when starting out hiking and not all the $$$ for a bunch of gear. For a lot of down hill, turning to the side can be steadier (especially with lots of steps downhill) and lift a bit of the strain on knees

Gonna remember this. I've started slipping more that I'm getting older, which h is scarier then when I was younger.

Good advice. Figured that out a while ago. Also helped strengthen your thighs, which is better for your knees long-term.
