Origin Story
King Edward VII (ruled 1901-1910) was too 'large' to wear his waist coats and jackets with the bottom button fastened, it was uncomfortable for horse riding, sitting and everyday activities because of his size. It wasn't custom to out dress the king in his presence so all men around him did the same and tailors later followed suit (no pun intended).
Provides a better look, drapes well and doesn't hug the body so much, that's why it's advised.
