I got the same speil the other day... my wife called an HVAC company out to inspect our AC unit that stopped working. ($150 charge) he determined the condensor fan motor was bad. but since our AC unit is over 20 years old he wouldn't even discuss repairing it. "they don't make the parts anymore" he only talked purchasing a new one. so I just bought a condenser fan motor used off eBay for a hundred bucks and did it myself with basic tools. I'm not an HVAC guy, but a couple YouTube videos later I have ice cold air conditioning once again. he quoted us $8000-$10000 for new HVAC system

I just had a company tell me I needed a new unit and they couldn't fix this one $8000. I called another company they came out put in a capacitor and some freon and working again for $500

Had a company who wanted $2600 to replace a blower motor, we bought one online (refurbished) for $300 and had a friend install it for $100.

HVAC has become a very predatory business over the last 5-10 years with companies like Service Experts. Find the local guy with 20 years experience that has 1 truck. He will fix it for 1/3 the price of Service Experts

Yall can thank Biden for the new freon, that was part of the reason everything jumped in price. Manufacturers had to change it.

2 AC units went out from us and they were like 25 years old. Cost about 50k with a furnace to boot. Then the roof. Now the driveway. The oven. The fridge. The front door. Tree removals. We’re tired.

Just grab the model number on the side of yours and google search the parts. Just saved myself 10k and only spent 800 total

My unit is 26 years old. I had someone come out and replace the capacitor. He said for it being 26 years old, Frankensteined together and ugly, it works amazing! He did offer me a quote for a new one, I said no, I paid for the work and he left. 100% most are just trying to get a new system sold.

Plenty of companies still make parts for older units. I just replaced the fan motor on a 20+ year old unit last year and it's running strong. these company guys are trained to upsell

Most contractors see repairs of a 15+ year unit as a liability because if something else brakes the home owner just keeps wanting it to be repaired under the same price.
