I love this book (I love a thousand splendid suns even more) although I particularly like the author's writing style and even the message he wants to convey, I think it's a bit of a propaganda book. I remember seeing a scene in atss where an american soldiers was praised but I'm not entirely sure because I read it 10 years ago yet that vibe didn't give me a good feeling so the us started the case in the first place, why is it seen as a savior? this book also doesn't explore the adaptation problems what they faced in the west nor does it delve into the deep layers of afghan/pashtun culture, although we see the entire story through the eyes of a privileged child perhaps that's why. the writing style makes it a ao pleasant read but even through the tajik author's eyes afghanistan is objectified far beyond the perspective of a westerner (I don't like orientalists at all but we're doing this ourselves without them) I actually have a lot more to say but I think I should reread it...
