One day your puppy is twelve. It’s strange how dogs grow old because in your mind they stay exactly the same. The same eyes, the same excitement over mud, tennis balls and dinner time. Then one day you look closely at their face and realise time has quietly been passing all along. Hugo has been beside me through so many different chapters of life. Different homes, different routines, different versions of me. Somehow he’s been the constant through all of it. He’s introduced me to some of my favourite people, made lonely moments feel less lonely and given structure and comfort to days that otherwise felt messy. I think dogs do that without ever realising it. They quietly become part of the rhythm of our lives. He’s been there through stressful days, heartbreak, exciting moments, ordinary moments and everything in between. Always nearby. Usually leaning against me like he can sense exactly when I need it most. And I think that’s the funny thing about dogs. You spend years believing you’re the one looking after them… then realise they’ve quietly been looking after you too. When Hugo was younger we used to run for miles together, and now in his older age I find myself slowing down for him instead. Carrying him up steps sometimes. Letting him sleep closer to me. Adjusting life around the dog who once adjusted so much of his life around me. Some days he’s just a muddy dog rolling in fox poo and chasing a ball through a field. Other days he’s curled up beside me snoring away like a tiny old man. None of the fancy things dogs experience ever seem to matter to them as much as simply being close to us. That’s all they really want. Twelve years of loving with his whole heart. And somehow I still just see the puppy I carried home.
