The "last words of Jesus" are recorded in the four Gospels of the New Testament. None of the Gospel writers were trying to provide a complete transcript, so each emphasizes different sayings. When Christians speak of the "Seven Last Words," they are combining statements from all four Gospels.
Here's who recorded them:
Last sayingRecorded by"Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."Gospel of Luke"Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise."Gospel of Luke"Woman, here is your son... Here is your mother."Gospel of John"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"Gospel of Matthew and Gospel of Mark"I thirst."Gospel of John"It is finished."Gospel of John"Father, into your hands I commit my spirit."Gospel of Luke
What does each Gospel say Jesus' final words were?
Each Gospel gives the last spoken words slightly differently because at that time no internet to verify time stamp.
Gospel of Mark: "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Then Jesus gave a loud cry and died.
Gospel of Matthew: Also records, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" followed by another loud cry before Jesus died.
Gospel of Luke: "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit."
Gospel of John: "It is finished."
Why are they different?
Most biblical scholars, both Christian and non-Christian, understand that the Gospel writers were not attempting to record every word Jesus spoke. Instead, each author selected sayings that supported the theological themes of their Gospel:
Mark the Evangelist emphasizes Jesus' suffering.
Matthew the Evangelist highlights the fulfillment of Scripture.
Luke the Evangelist emphasizes Jesus' trust in the Father and forgiveness.
John the Evangelist presents Jesus as completing his mission.
Because the Gospels are complementary rather than identical accounts, many Christians believe Jesus spoke all seven sayings during the crucifixion, with each Gospel preserving different parts of the event. Scholars, however, differ on whether all seven can be reconstructed with certainty from the historical evidence.
