@howiethecrab: It's easier for some people to call me crazy than to acknowledge that crabs have sensory organs embedded in their shells and can feel pain. Why? Because the truth is uncomfortable. When children ask, "Does that hurt the crab?" many adults repeat what they were told: that crabs don't feel it or die instantly. Those myths have been passed down for generations. I'm here to change that. Crabs do feel it, and death can take minutes. The larger the crab, the longer it takes. What's even more heartbreaking is that when a crab stops moving, it doesn't necessarily mean it's no longer aware. The legs stop moving first because heat damages the nerves that control movement, while the ganglia is protected deep inside the carapace. Most crabs are also already weakened by starvation and lack of oxygen. Don't mistake an inability to fight back for an absence of pain. Crabs are sentient, intelligent animals. Most people simply haven't had the opportunity to get to know one. If you choose to eat shellfish, please humanely spike them before cooking.
