I love this explanation but in practice it’s a little hazy to get your head round. You could argue for the same reason that it’s ’go cinema’ or ‘go bank’ as you invariably only go to those places to do the thing they were created for.

so is there any way of "going to supermarket" ? I'm going there for it's specific intended purposes of buying food/groceries. I could say "I'm going to Tesco's" or "I'm going to Sainsbury's" so I'm specifically naming the shop, but I still cannot add "the" if I'm not going to shop, eg "I'm going to Sainsbury's to fix the broken food chillers". What's the intended purpose of a shop if it's not to buy something?

Its more so that we see schools prisons church as more conceptual when somone says "he goes to school" they aren't talking about the fact he goes to the building of the school they are talking about how he is getting educated. Like how we say "going to work" work isn't a place it's a conceptual term we use to refer to a job.

I don't really understand. If you go to the supermarket, then you also go there for its intended purpose, don't you? You go there for shopping, just like you go to a church for praying, and so forth. All of them are specific institutions/buildings with an intended purpose, yet we cannot go to supermarket without the The. (I'm a non-native speaker, so I might miss out some fine cues. Do you think you could explain it again, in a few different words? please?)
