The nickname the Impaler comes from his predilection for impaling enemies. During his lifetime, his reputation as a cruel and bloodthirsty man spread throughout Europe and, mainly, to the Holy Roman Empire. Vlad III is revered as a folk hero in Romania, as well as in other parts of Europe, for protecting the Romanian population both south and north of the Danube and for his brutality.
