Have multiple degrees (including doctorates) & a photographic memory, so I know this is a totally RIDICULOUS statement. Memorization is not just about absorption (& retrieval) of knowledge. The brain is much more complex than that, & memorization is an important part (of development, cognition, judgment, wisdom, etc).

Well shit. The internet is down and I dont know what 6x6 is because memorization has been eliminated. Let's not let technology change how we are able to use our minds. Let's remember that it wouldn't take much for technology to just go poof, and its gone. Lets remember our history of the library of Alexandria that burnt down losing lots of knowledge that we will never get back. That 100% can happen to tech. Then we are lost as a civilization and back in the stone age.

Some memorization is actually beneficial. Basic math facts are an everyday tool. Memorizing poetry or speeches helps both in cognitive development and language arts education. Memorizing lists … eh not so much.

Memorizing who the 19th president was isn’t as useful as understanding who the 19th president was, what impacts they had, what mistakes they made, and what made them successful. Learning should be adding tools to your toolbox, to empower a your ability to understand, think outside the box, and make better decisions. Regurgitating facts is what AI can do.

I think we need to discern “memorization” not just as the ability to remember, because clearly we want that ability. I think the distinction Gary is talking about is “memorization of facts” isn’t the same thing as learning. Learning a set of facts instead of learning how to aggregate information TO be memorized is the core distinction I believe

Memorization is a keystone for learning, from your alphabet to words and phrases, numbers and basic calculations. It trains your brain to embark on higher level thinking, and is absolutely necessary. We just need to consider more carefully what we practice memorizing.

That isn't lazy or old-fashioned; it's the literal architecture the brain requires to remain sharp, creative, and capable of navigating the world. It’s not “memorization” it’s retention. What happens when Ai hallucinates and gives you the wrong answer? If you somewhat remember the answer you might go “that doesn’t sound right” and then research further. The moment you think it’s okay to not retain or learn anything and leave all knowledge to the internet you’ve lost all independence.

Memorization isn’t about remembering the material as much as it is about building the muscle between your ears. Today’s school systems are already lacking in this exercise don’t ask them to do even less of it.
