I think a lot of people tend to forget that A Song of Ice and Fire was created back in the 90s, a time where the main protagonist/hero is often a male in the majority of media. This ranges from books, to video games, movies, etc. female leads were rare and often overlooked bc of misogyny, intentional or not. For George to make the decision that a little girl will be the hero who has this major role in the story and will essentially save the world, rather than a man/boy, is very subversive for that time. This ofc applies to Bran as well since a lot of people tend to paint disabled people as incapable or inferior, this leads to infantilization which only hurts them more. To have someone, especially a disabled child, that is bound to be overshadowed by the majority of the readers be more important than the stereotypical protagonist (in this case, Jon) is again, very subversive for the 90s. The show messed up a lot of people when it comes to reading and interpreting the books, especially since it started during a time where female characters were gradually getting more attention with the ‘girlboss’ trope.
