Healthy is relative, calories from "junk food" are always better than no calories from food you can't stomach

When I had cancer, the only thing I could eat was dry cheerios. Everything else tasted awful.

this is why I hate the concept of "healthy" vs "unhealthy" foods in general, different foods have different jobs in your body and your circumstances will impact which of those jobs you should prioritize

Let’s also remember that chemo can cause mouth sores, making it extremely painful to eat along with the sickness.

When my dad was battling cancer, his doctor literally told him "steak and potatoes. Burgers. Whatever you can comfortable put down that is high in calories."... He wasn't concerned with whether or not in was nurient dense. My dad was losing weight, and that was the more critical need.

Worked with cancer patients for a long time. The food that guy showed are from the cafeteria, not the trays that are brought to patients. And if a patient wants a burger who has cancer, I’m going to their favorite spot and getting it for them

I'd argue and say there's no unhealthy food, just an unhealthy amount. You can eat an unhealthy amount of "healthy" foods just like you can eat a healthy amount of unhealthy foods

When I was going through my stem cell transplant. I couldn’t eat anything like nothing. One day I woke up craving yohoos (a chocolate drink) the nurses helped my dad find the nearest market that sold it. They didn’t care it was processed chocolate drink, they cared I was thirsty and craving something that had fats and sugar.

I work in pediatric oncology. It’s so hard for our patients to keep weight on we encourage parents to give them whatever they’ll eat. Don’t get me wrong it can cause issues when they’re off treatment, but active treatment is about survival so all rules out the window.

as a cancer patient all I eat on a regular day is fruit, because it's all my body wants, but I'm also losing weight rapidly. fruit and veggies are great but not exactly loaded with calories. so when I'm having a "good" day, I load up on junk. cheeseburger, cheesecake, whatever has the most calories that I can eat! ice cream is always highly recommended for chemo patients.

Also, when you're pregnant especially in the first trimester with morning sickness. My friends doctor told her at this point whatever you can keep down is perfect well worry about well-rounded nutrition when you aren't throwing up every 5 minutes.

What's funny it's that comment about eating more nutritious food isn't wrong, and it's just no correct in the way they thought. If all the person can tolerate is a burger, then that is far more nutritious better than not eating anything.

hey yea so I was in the hospital for 30 days earlier this year. I was practically 1 step away from Chemotherapy. I lost 30lbs. over those 30 days. the doctors and nutritionist there were extremely happy for me to be eating pizza, fast food, desserts, anything and all food was highly encouraged because of the state my body was in.

Junk food is cheap, high in calories (usually) and can taste decent enough for patients. It’s not about healthy food it’s about keeping patients alive, not only with treatment but also with their needs like food.

I feel like all those commenters need to understand intention versus impact. I also feel like they don’t understand because they’ve never been in that situation thank God.

while doing targeted therapy I was told by my sarcoma team to eat ice cream as often as I wanted. lived off saltines, ramen, ice cream, sandwiches. the point is to SURVIVE

a lot of these responses seem to be caused by the thinking that if they just eat the right diet, they will never develop cancer and that's simply just not the case. I feel like a lot of people's inflexibility comes from anxiety about their own health except it knocks their critical thinking offline. my mother smoked weed when she had cancer because it was the only way to get her appetite back.
