For the record, I’ve never once watched one of your videos and thought “he’s mean” or “he lacks empathy”. I’ve always admired your thoughtfulness

as an autistic queer woman I've found it very hard to make friends with gay men because of the meanness , especially when it's passive aggressive. I just don't understand the jabs at someone else, friends or not.

This is a fascinating take. However, I do feel like there’s a lack of personal accountability to it. You can definitely make the choice to be a kinder person no matter what has happened to you or your socialization SINCE you are now an adult and AWARE of how those factors have shaped you. I appreciate you say you don’t condone this behavior.

This take might be too deterministic: we can make different choices…we dont have to be mean!

You being a Capricorn makes so much sense. Your takes always give "let's get to the root of this," in a refreshing way.

I’m interested in people’s thoughts between the way queer men and queer women are socialized and how that impacts the ways we build community. As a cis woman I was socialized to be kind and accommodating, and as a queer woman it feels like I need to be even more so. Anyone have book recs on the topic?

I find that the more I have healed my childhood wounds and decolonized my mind and body, the more empathic and kind I have become.

As someone “raised to be nice”, I find your content refreshing. We don’t have to be nice - but I think you are empathetic.

I think also like the meanness because it's the norm can also be a vehicle for connection. like a particularly accurate read is almost kinda flattering because it shows that you are thinking about and considering the other person

I am.so fascinated by this as an elder gay. I make friends with other Gay men every where I go in the rules I was socialized in, in the 80s, reading and dragging only happened when earned, not as a default. Not a criticism of anyone, just legit confusion. I would love to have a conversation with you.

i wish this video tied back to the concept of the book more. when i read velvet rage 2 things stuck out to me. 1 how we overcompensate as adults due to unresolved shame (this was addressed more in the vid) and that can look like meanness, hyper-sexuality, workaholism. 2 he does put forth a path for a better life that entails accepting vulnerability, processing shame, and living an authentic life according to internal values rather than external ones like career success or body image or sexual prowess.

Do you think that the meanness is the patriarchy at work? Mean behavior can bring divide and makes it difficult to form community sometimes. Idk it seems very isolating

I think as a society we have this view that empathy = nice. But that’s a misunderstanding of what empathy actually is. It’s the understanding of another persons situation. Just because you understand what someone’s dealing with doesn’t mean you can’t be real with them.

Psychology background here- I also feel there should be a distinction between kind and nice. There are a lot of truly kind, genuine people who have been socialized to suppress it or save it for those in their circle. If you don’t feel safe, it’s easy to guard and coming across guarded can be considered “not nice”. Nice has always seemed surface level/socially encouraged to me while Kind has always seemed deeper, more built into the core. This was really interesting to hear though, thank you for sharing your take (and a reading rec to dig deeper into this!)
