The silence in the upstairs room was suddenly too heavy. On the ground floor, the mother suddenly woke up. No noise had knocked her out of her sleep, only a strange and sudden feeling of cold. She looked at the alarm clock on her bedside table: 2:33 a.m. She put on his dressing gown, moved by that infallible maternal instinct that needs no explanation, only confirmation. She climbed the steps one by one, slowly, so as not to make any noise. She thought about how many times he had made that journey when he was little, after a nightmare or to roll up his blankets. She opened the door of the chamber, a thin crack illuminated only by the light of the moon." Honey? Are you awake?" She whispered. Approaching the bed, She saw the still-shiny tear on his kid's cheek. On the floor, the unlabeled vial reflected a silvery beam. She took his hand, still warm. There was no beating, there was no breathing, but in that moment, despair could not erase the truth of a lifetime. She squeezed him, bringing his mind back to those hot afternoons in the park, when She ran his fingers through his hair. The room was still, time had stopped. Her life was broken, but as She kissed his forehead, he whispered the words she wanted to hear: "I know, my love. I know. I love you too." Love had not vanished; it had remained there, filling all the empty space.
