Hello fellow Terp here 👋 been watching your videos for a while for now. I had a similar experience before. Had a Deaf client who was losing his sight , didn't know ASL, tactile or English, knew some LSM and some Spanish . The Deaf interpreter was not only able to communicate clearly with him but beautifully able to communicate with me too so that I understood every aspect and could inform the doctor about their concerns for treatment.It's so fascinating to see Deaf interpreters in action. So many times did I wish I had one , they're truly so valuable. We need more! 🤟😊👍

My daughter’s class of 7 deaf kids has a hearing teacher who teaches in ASL, a Deaf interpreter and an ASL interpreter. It really is crucial to have every aspect of the language available.

Ok, hear me out with the analogy. An interpreter who can hear is like someone who grew up in England, speaking English, then learned Spanish. They then meet someone who was born and raised in Mexio. They both now work over there, speaking Spanish. They have a client who is young, has only lived in a small village in Mexio, and is trying to articulate a lot of things so that a group of people in England who only speak English can understand. The person who speaks both languages doesn't understand all the slang, or the child's upbringing. The other person does. And because the 2 have a good relationship, the English person is able to translate the story back into words that the people from England will understand.

This is my first time hearing about this... that there is an English to ASL interpreter and a Deaf Interpreter. I thought they were one in the same (not knowing the definition at first). I was thinking, at first, that the Deaf Interpreter was just someone who does the translation for Deaf individuals, not that they were Deaf themselves. Got it now.

Deaf interpreters are SO important! I work in care coordination and having a CDI and ASL interpreter present during my meetings with D/deaf clients makes communication much clearer.
