the quilt is viewable online through the national aids memorial’s website! i would highly recommend scrolling around for a few minutes - while not comparable to viewing the real thing, still an incredible experience ❤️

I need to learn to sew and make a square for my uncle. I was 10 when he died in 95 or 96. Our family is not very supportive. I (his bisexual niece) inherited his biker jacket & wore it all through highschool & college. My trans kiddo now wears it in high school. I think about him. I tell my kid about him. We wish he was here. I wish I knew his friends or someone who knew & accepted him....his chosen family. Someone else who remembers him. I searched the memorial quilt for his name, square 3878 might be referring to him, just the wrong first name (Tom instead of Tim).

I’m a queer quilter. My first piece was incredibly janky, and I’m going to do another one, but this is my best piece. Because it’s the one people knew. I wore it to pride and young and old just nodded like they knew. My next quilted piece will be bigger. Because we deserve to be seen.

I used to work at the lgbtq+ student center at my college and I was charge of coordinating a display of blocks of the quilt for several years. It was one of the biggest gifts of my life as a queer person to be able to touch and see small pieces of this enormous history. You can search the entire quilt for names and places through the National AIDS Memorial’s website where it’s been lovingly digitized. It’s worth a million looks 💕💕💕
