She's 100% right. You have to start small if you want to achieve something big. Keep a clear vision, work consistently, and you can accomplish your goals."

I believe if someone like Seun had made that same statement, it would have been widely applauded. Sometimes, it's not the message that's questioned but the person delivering it. During the COVID-19 period, I empowered a woman with an opportunity, she sells akara. Today, she earns more than many Permanent Secretaries. That's why I firmly believe that genuine empowerment can transform lives far beyond temporary handouts.

I think the issue isn’t really with the statement itself, but with how it was said and by who. If we look at it objectively, what’s wrong with giving a grant to an akara seller to grow their business, even if they didn’t go to school or learn a formal trade? The goal of the grant is to help small businesses, right? We shouldn’t expect every beneficiary to need a car or heavy machinery. From that perspective, the statement actually makes sense. My 2 cent though

I’m not trying to insult him, but they’re always quick to tell us stories about what their parents did 60–70 years ago. ₦200 sixty years ago had the buying power of roughly ₦2–3 million today, so comparisons need context. Talking about the 1960s as if things have not changed ignores how much harder life has become for many people. Both of my grandparents were farmers and they were able to build more than two houses, and one even owned a car. Today, how many farmers can realistically build a house and own a car from farming income alone? That’s assuming they even make it through challenges like insecurity and are able to harvest what they plant.
