"Hey you, out there in the cold / Getting lonely, getting old / Can you feel me?" He calls out. No one answers. The wall is too high, too strong. He cannot break free. Roger Waters wrote it about his own failed marriage, the isolation of fame, and the terrifying realization that we need other people to survive . The final warning—"together we stand, divided we fall"—is the song's thesis . The recording is full of secrets: · The "worms ate into his brain" sound effect? A hand-held power drill, recorded by engineer James Guthrie · The shimmering acoustic guitar used Nashville tuning—the low E replaced by a high E two octaves above normal · David Gilmour played fretless bass (not Waters) The song was cut from the 1982 film.
