I work with low income seniors and i often think about this. i try to remind coworkers not to blame clients' adult kids because we have no idea what happened in the past.

So many people think my mom is this adorable person. She’s tiny, funny, has an infectious laugh. She is someone I would like if she wasn’t my mother. But I’m the one who bore the brunt of her disappointment, lack of connection, rage, etc…..

I see it with my mom. She really performs in front of the doctor.

Thanks for this. Our current hospice provider when we thought my mom was dying one night on her way out said “don’t feel bad about how you treated your mom” as she walked out the door, don’t imagine that as a sweet statement. She would be homeless with ALS if I didn’t take her in , but the hospice nurse didn’t like that I kept working (like I had a choice). It’s been infuriating -but a low resource state with not a lot of options. I’m a LCSW, so it’s made me feel all sorts of ways going through this from a professional standpoint and personally.

I do not want to b a burden on my children. I would rather b in a place where I'm taken care of by professionals.

My parents are a nightmare. It took my mom going into psychosis from ALZ for us kids to 5150 her to get her help. My dad allowed her to still call the shots on not seeing drs. I am TRAUMATIZED still. I hate what is happening to her and I hate that my dad has to be her caregiver but I WILL NOT be their caregiver. Too much baggage, too much first daughter pressure. I CANNOT.

I learned early that I have no idea what kind of parent/person my patient was. I cant make assumptions or judge based on how people show up (or not). I meet them where they are. you want updates? cool. you dont? cool.

Agree relationships are so complicated and occur over decades often. My dad has dementia and I’m not actively caring for him. But I do care for my grandmother who’s 87. People also don’t know the other family dynamics and capacity is.

We need a better infrastructure for aging people; even in the best circumstances, the adult children face putting their own livelihoods, careers, and retirements at risk trying to care for their parents if affordable LTC isn’t an option.

the problem is the emotional burden that facilities and hired help and insurance don’t provide full, end to end adequate care 🥺

The way you’re framing this - that the children “don’t show up” - is completely unfair. Did the parents ever show up for them?

My mom lives with us, meaning me my husband and young adult kids. A part of my motivation aside from being there for my mom is for my kids to see what family is all about. And we all take care of each other.

Hey there, as a home health nurse, I did not expect the amount of families who would be in distress caregiving for their loved one and the patients isnt even “end of life”/hospice yet 🥺 These people are crying out for help and it is so sad.
