@earlycareercorner: is it your early talent’s fault that they’re not coming to you with questions?? or, do you make them feel dumb every time they raise their hand? 🤷‍♀️💼 #genz #employee #manager #feedback #workplace

I'm a millennial, I have ALWAYS asked a million questions. Now I worry about asking because EVERY question is treated like a failure of job duties "They all just can't do anything, they need too much guidance!" and "they don't ask enough questions!" often comes out of the same mouth. There is no winning

And are they running into a point of confusion, or was there inadequate training? My old manager used to do this to me a lot- she’d assign me a task, give me the procedures, and tell me to figure it out. I would follow the procedures as written, and then days later get ripped a new one because I was skipping an essential but unwritten step, or following an outdated part of the procedure. She would always end these discussions with “next time you’re confused, ask questions instead of making us clean up behind you” BUT I WASNT CONFUSED. I DIDNT HAVE ANY QUESTIONS. I WAS PROVIDED INACCURATE INFORMATION

I’ve stopped asking questions because all I get are non answers and I have to keep probing to get the answer I need.

The tone matters so much too. I had a teacher who everytime she explained or clarified smt would do so in a childish tone (and the way she worded it was rude but still) and it frustrated the hell out of me

I work in medical admin. each careline has different rules. we are told we HAVE to use provider codes for pretty much everything besides a select few. ok cool. provider not credentialed w us only clinic, deny. "oh no that type you can, if you don't know ask" HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW WHAT TO ASK AND WHEN. "could we get a list of little unique one offs?" "unfortunately each careline has on offs, it would be nice though" THEN DO IT??? WHAT?? Anyway they expect us to know w/o guidance or improper guidance then get mad when we fail

Companies have stopped real training. They just say shadow this person (who was probably hired 6 months ago) and learn from them. That isn’t actually training

As a gen Z hire, I feel completely comfortable asking questions because I’m met with “great question, you didn’t know that, so happy to talk through it”

I regularly ask questions or for help. I am regularly ignored. we were told our new headsets record us, and that we need to watch how we word communications. my question is if we are really being listened to by corporate as often as they say we are, why cant they address the lack of communication and help when we do attempt to ask for help or guidance. if a question is asked we are often made to feel as id we are in trouble, and this is not just gen z. my older coworker brought up she is feeling unseen, disrespected, condescended etc when she asks for help or a clarifying question.

My asking questions was conflate with "questioning authority." Like, I just want to know who all should be included in the email, because I am not part of the project and am just trying to schedule the meeting. I want to know what company policy and procedure is, because its different for every company even for very similar things. I don't want to be told it's " common sense" and then be punished because I guessed wrong 🙃

It’s not just Gen Z. I’m Gen X and started a job two months ago and I just told my husband I feel completely and utterly stupid at this job. I ask a question and it’s met with a deep sigh and eye roll. I’m not asking the same question over and over.

Was told my manager hates being asked questions and once I asked for clarification and she got snippy and said she’d do it for me. Then at my performance review said I should ask more questions. Crazy

as a millennial manager, I've never had this problem. I constantly tell my new hires, that it's okay if they don't remember everything immediately as long as they know more than they did the day before. I give them a test a year in and I tell them it's specifically designed to see where I messed up in teaching them something
