the mountain outlook one we call the ice caves. They are massive fissures of rock right at that top with water and sometimes ice in the 20-50 ft cracks, followed by the valley view at the top.

Did you go from Piedra Road by the “ice caves”(which have not had ice in the summer for years) or the Piedra River Road off 160? Good fishing in there.

Five year ago, rode in there with a friend and a pack horse for gear and lunch. On the way out, a tree fell on me, never heard a thing, broke my neck, and a bad cut, and knocked me out, knocked my horse down. Horses ran off. Then started to rain. My friend went to catch horses, told me to wait. Longer I waited, worse I felt, so I started walking out. Note: I made sure to keep my eye on the river to make sure I was going the right way. It was four mile to trailhead, raining, muddy, slippery, chinks, spurs, gun, slicker, fell a few times and had to crawl back up to trial. My friend caught the horses, sent for help, loaded horses and drove to bridge just as I got there. I literally just stepped into truck. Met rescue people on the way down. And that is how I met Mike LaRue. He was head of Archuleta County Rescue then, now Sheriff. Pagosa is lucky to have him. Good man, good sheriff.

An interesting thing to note, a few years ago, there was a fire in there. It only burned on the West side. Great way to see before and after results. The first year was gorgeous with wild flowers. Lots more game on the burned part too.
