Literacy starts with listening. Speaking. Remembering. Pattern. Rhythm. Voice. Long before reading was written down, it was spoken. Oral storytelling traditions across Ghana and West Africa understood something modern literacy education is only now catching up to: the ear comes before the eye. Here's what that looks like at home: → Story Retelling After a book talk about what happened, helping them find their own words. → Call and Response I say a line. She repeats, finishes, riffs. Building listening, rhythm, and language patterns the same mechanics behind every oral tradition that kept culture alive across generations. → Sound Play Rhymes. Silly sounds. Beginning sounds. The alphabet cards come after the play. Always. Because phonological awareness lives in the mouth and the laugh Research: Vygotsky's concept of the Zone of Proximal Development : children grow into literacy through guided interaction, not isolation with a page. Walter Ong's Orality and Literacy (1982) : oral culture is a sophisticated cognitive tradition. Hart & Risley (1995) : the quality and richness of early language = reading comprehension years later, far more than early exposure to letters alone. Age Modifications: Ages 1–3: Repetitive books with rhythm (Bear Hunt, Brown Bear). Sing everything. Narrate daily life. Let them finish your sentences. Sound play by clapping syllables, animal sounds, silly rhymes. Ages 3–5: Story retelling after books. Call and response games. Introduce rhyme families (cat, bat, hat). Ask "what happens next?" before turning the page. Let them make up their own endings. Ages 6–8: Retell stories with beginning, middle, end. Play with word sounds alliteration, tongue twisters. Introduce the idea that letters represent sounds they already know. Read aloud together even after they can read alone. Ages 9–12: Oral storytelling as a practice tell a story from memory, no book. Explore cultural oral traditions globally. Discuss rhythm and pattern in poetry. Use call and response in learning new vocabulary or concepts. #HomegrownClassroom #LearningInSession #ghanatiktok🇬🇭 #homeschoolmum #toddlerlife @Village Education on the flashcards
