📋 What happened: A New York Fed survey released Wednesday found consumers expect inflation to be even higher a year from now, while views of their own finances got worse. More households said they're in a worse financial situation than a year ago and expect to be weaker in the coming year. The survey polls a rotating panel of about 1,300 household heads. ⛽ The gas price squeeze: Gas prices rose nearly 4% in August and more than 27% from August 2025, per the latest consumer price index. The national average was $4.37 a gallon Wednesday, per AAA, up from about $3.12 a year ago. 🗣️ What analysts say: Matt Schulz, LendingTree: "This data is just further proof that Americans are worried about inflation getting worse before it gets better." Heather Long, Navy Federal Credit Union: "Spending remained strong in August, but income growth is not keeping up. Many people are dipping into savings or using credit to continue spending and that's not sustainable." ⚖️ The other side: The same survey found income and spending growth expectations both increased. Bank of America analysts wrote on Oct. 1: "The consumer continues to defy gravity." They added the gas surge could weigh on discretionary spending, likely hit lower-income households hardest, and may feed through to food inflation. ✅ Bottom line: Households expect higher prices and weaker finances ahead, yet spending is holding up for now. How are rising prices showing up in your budget?
